Standstill: Winter Solstice 2023
Can you take a day out of time?
Can you turn your gaze, not just to the Sun,
but expansively, to the rhythms that play out
as the Sun and Earth dance together
over the course of seasons,
running and twisting, this way and that,
spinning , and laughing.
Having gone all the way to the edge of the dance floor,
they pause, in the almost-shadows,
each intent on the other, arms extended,
but hands firmly clasped.
The Earth, dizzily whirling away,
such graceful spinning!
Pauses, just for an instant, at arm’s length,
just long enough to take in the scene… with the Sun, and the shadows,
and thinks that maybe it is time for them to make their way
back, toward the center,
the music quieter, and cooler. A time of rest
after the sizzling heat, the lights, the striving,
the joy of expressing the shine of life within them.
Can you pause…
for a moment,
before taking your next step,
and try to see, with clarity, where you have just come from,
where you are headed,
and how you honestly feel about that?
Taking a day out of time,
to do nothing other than simply feel
as honestly as you can,
could give you
time
to live with greater honesty, higher intentions.
Take the gift that is offered…
and live.
